Setting the DHCP lease time for your server is critical to performance. Whether you want to keep your employees connected or you want to keep your customers happy by providing wireless, you have to make sure that this setting is adjusted to keep the server open for new connections.

For home networks, you don't have to change the DHCP Lease time. Just leave it on default and you will be fine. Small Offices, Corporate Networks and Guest Networks, on the other hand, will need some planning when settings up the DHCP Server.

The DHCP lease time represents the period of time between when your computer or device obtained its IP address from the router and the time when it expires. When the DHCP lease time expires, your computer or device automatically releases its IP address and asks the router to give it a new one.

Generally, the recommended time to lease an IP address is 48 hours (172800 seconds) to renew the IP address once a day. After applying the specified parameters, clients will receive an IP address for 1 minute, after which they will send a request to the DHCP server for a new IP address every 30 seconds.

Open the properties of the DHCP scope for which you want to change the lease time. Under the Lease duration for DHCP clients section, choose General tab. Then input a new lease time in the Limited to field. Then click OK to save your changes.

Failure to adjust the lease time will likely result in a shortage of IP addresses. You want to make sure that any IP addresses that are being used just temporarily expire after a set amount of time. You may even have to set the DHCP lease time on your home network if you have many devices.
