Adjust Footnote Charter For Free

Under Location in the Footnote and Endnote menu, find the Footnotes option (it should be selected by default when you first open the menu). Open the dropdown menu to the right of that option and you can change your footnote location to either the bottom of the page or below the text.

Remove or change a footnote or endnote separator The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.

By default, the Footnote Reference character style is defined as Superscript. Select one of your footnote references (in text or in the footnote), right-click, and choose Style... Click Modify, then Format, then Font and make sure that the box for Superscript is checked. Click OK three times to close and save.

Go to the References tab in the top menu bar. Here, you'll find the Footnotes section. Select Insert Footnote. After you've placed a Word footnote, a number in superscript will appear in your text and you'll be able to insert the reference text in the footer.
