Bates numbering is a way of indexing legal documents for easy retrieval and identification. It is a common practice in law offices to add Acrobat bates numbering to routine legal documents and pages. Usually, bates numbering is added in the header or footer of the document.

Bates numbering (also known as Bates stamping, Bates branding, Bates coding or Bates labeling) is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference number. A hand-operated Bates numbering device is used to "stamp" a number on a page, and the numbers will automatically advance after each stamping.

To remove Bates numbers from a PDF file: On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Marks group, click the arrow next to Bates Number and click Remove Bates Numbering. Click OK at the confirmation prompt, and the tool will scan the document and remove all instances of Bates numbering.

Add Bates number to existing file names Go to Tools > Edit PDF. In the Edit PDF toolbar, click More > Bates Numbering > Add. In the Bates Numbering dialog box, click Output Options. Choose Add To Original File Names, and enter %BATES_NUMBER_KEY% in the Insert Before or Insert After fields as desired.

If you have Acrobat Pro create a new Action (via Tools - Action Wizard) with the Remove Bates Numbering command and a Save command and then run it on your files.

How to add Bates Numbering to a PDF in Adobe Acrobat. Open the file. Click Tools. Select Edit PDF. Choose More. Click Bates Numbering and Add. Select Output Options to customize the serial numbers. Click OK.

Select Edit > Insert > Bates Numbering > Remove to permanently remove Bates numbers from currently open files. Other header and/or footer elements, if any, are retained.
