The agency serves over 295 schools, approximately 163 school districts and 53 supervisory unions across the state. We provide leadership, support and oversight to communities and local education leaders. Our goal is to ensure that the Vermont public education system enables all students to be successful.

Every year, towns in Vermont send money raised through property taxes to the state education fund. The fund in turn distributes money back out to school districts to pay a large portion of the annual school budgets approved by each school districts' voters.

Establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, and distributing as well as monitoring those funds. Collecting data on America's schools and disseminating research. Focusing national attention on key educational issues. Prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education.

School choice is a term that refers to programs offering alternatives to assigned local public school options. Public school choice options include open enrollment policies, magnet schools, and charter schools. Other options include school vouchers, scholarship tax credits, and education savings accounts (ESAs).

As part of a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS), all schools will maintain an Educational Support Team (EST).

The Agency of Education implements state and federal laws, policies, and regulations to ensure all Vermont learners have equitable access to high-quality learning opportunities. The Agency accomplishes this mission through the provision of its leadership, support, and oversight of Vermont's public education system.
