A "pastor" may be either ordained or commissioned, depending on the methods used to appoint a person into the role, with either way resulting in the same authority and responsibilities to provide shepherding and grace to a congregation.

If your church is looking for someone to temporarily fill the lead pastor position while you search for your next permanent lead pastor, you probably noticed that there are several different terms that apply to this type of position. The most common terms are “transitional pastor” and “interim pastor”.

There are many different types of Pastor jobs. Some churches have several Pastors on staff with each overseeing specific aspects of the church, like missions, children's ministry, preaching, youth ministry, family counseling, music, and executive duties.

The role of the pastor is to lead a local church. However, the manner by which the pastor is called to lead is nuanced by three terms that are used interchangeably in the New Testament to speak of the office of the pastor. These three words are bishop, elder, and pastor.

A priest-in-residence is a priest who, while not assigned to work in the parish, lives in the rectory. Usually this is a retired priest, although it may also be a priest who is assigned to teaching, administration of the diocese, or similar non-parish tasks.

For the sake of simplicity, consider this definition: “A residency is a period of specialized discipleship for those who are committed to live out their calling in the ministry of the gospel.” Churches use various terms to describe residents, such as interns, associates and apprentices.

While lead pastors are the heads of their churches, many larger churches have different pastors who specialize in different aspects of church life. Assistant pastors provide administrative and spiritual support for the lead pastor and may lead services when the lead pastor is not available.
