He subject. While there are many excellent expositions of general relativity, few adequately explain the geometrical meaning of the basic equation of the theory: Einstein s equation. Here we give a simple formulation of this equation in terms of the motion of freely falling test particles. We also sketch some of the consequences of this formulation and explain how it is equivalent to the usual one in terms of tensors. Finally, we include an annotated bibliography of books, articles and website.

V2 FAQ
-
E = mc2. It's the world's most famous equation, but what does it really mean? "Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared." On the most basic level, the equation says that energy and mass (matter) are interchangeable; they are different forms of the same thing.
-
A common example of this is that 1 gram of water — if its whole mass were converted into pure energy via E=mc² — contains energy equivalent to 20,000 tons (18,143 metric tons) of TNT exploding. That's why such a small amount of uranium or plutonium can produce such a massive atomic explosion.
-
And that's exactly what it is. The G tensor, called the Einstein tensor, contains information about the curvature of space-time. At this point, we can confidently say that the field equations merely tell us how the distribution of matter and energy warps space-time.
-
Einstein went on to present his findings mathematically: energy (E) equals mass (m) times the speed of light (c) squared (2), or E=mc2. The secret the equation revealed—that mass and energy are different forms of the same thing—had eluded scientists for centuries.
-
Einstein's equation is used to convert mass to energy when determining nuclear binding energy. The mass-energy equivalence equation, represented by E=mc², reveals that a small amount of mass can be converted into a significant amount of energy, as observed in nuclear reactions.
-
Einstein and the Nuclear Age Although he never worked directly on the atomic bomb, Einstein is often incorrectly associated with the advent of nuclear weapons. His famous equation E=mc2 explains the energy released in an atomic bomb but doesn't explain how to build one.
-
Nuclear energy is energy released from an atom's nucleus when a small amount of mass is converted to energy during atomic fission or fusion ing to the famous Einstein equation E=mc2 or energy equals mass times the speed of light squared.
-
Nuclear fusion and nuclear fission result in a mass change, Δm, between the starting product and the end product. The loss of mass produces an energy E = Δmc2, where c equals the speed of light.
