A high deductible plan (HDHP) can be combined with a health savings account (HSA), allowing you to pay for certain medical expenses with money free from federal taxes.

The new 2024 HSA contribution limit is $4,150 if you are single—a 7.8% increase from the maximum contribution limit of $3,850 in 2023. The 2024 HSA contribution limit for families is $8,300, a 7.1% increase from the 2023 limit of $7,750. For HSA users aged 55 and older, you can contribute an extra $1,000 to your HSAs.

If you have money in your HSA when you turn 65, you can spend it on anything you want — but if you aren't spending it for a qualified medical expense, it will be taxed as income at your then current tax rate.

"Potential tax drawbacks: Prior to age 65, HSA funds withdrawn to pay for nonmedical expenses are considered taxable income. The IRS also levies a 20 percent penalty. Expenses can be audited by the IRS so you should keep receipts for all payments made with HSA funds.

Contribution limits: In 2023, the maximum contribution you can make to an HSA is $3,850 for single coverage ($4,850 for those aged 55+) and $7,500 for family coverage ($8,500 aged 55+). Notably, the “base” contribution limit is indexed for inflation, whereas the age 55 catch-up limit ($1,000) is not.

Potential for Misuse Another potential drawback of using an HSA account is the risk of misuse. HSA funds can only be used for qualified medical expenses, and any non-qualified expenses will be subject to a penalty.
