Mozilla FAQ
-
Perhaps the biggest unique advantage for Chrome early on was the sandboxing of separate browser tabs. Browser crashing was a fairly common thing, especially on Internet Explorer. Sandboxing meant that if one tab crashed, the entire session didn't go down with it.
-
In November 2011, Chrome overtook Firefox for the first time and gained 27% of users. And six months later, Internet Explorer had to give way to Chrome. In July 2012, Chrome had 33% of the market. IE held 32%, and by the end of the year, the difference between the giants increased to 6%.
-
An older browser, like IE 7, will be unable to display many modern web pages using HTML5 and CSS3 programming. Google Chrome has the edge on HTML5. It supports drag-n-drop, geolocation, device orientation and other new-fangled features. It also supports much of CSS3.
-
The first web browser - or browser-editor rather - was called WorldWideWeb as, after all, when it was written in 1990 it was the only way to see the web. Much later it was renamed Nexus in order to save confusion between the program and the abstract information space (which is now spelled World Wide Web with spaces).
-
Lack of Support Internet Explorer has been slow to innovate over the years. Significant gaps between new releases and version updates led to other browsers taking over and becoming preferred. Microsoft chose to bet on Edge rather than IE and announced an end to critical support for the aging browser.
-
In the end, Microsoft won the browser war against Netscape for two simple reasons: It had deep enough pockets to offer its browser free forever, and it could place that browser in a prominent position on the home screens of more than 90% of the personal computers sold.
-
The Browser Wars Computer software giant Microsoft licensed the old Mosaic code and built its own window to the web, Internet Explorer. The release sparked a war. Netscape and Microsoft worked feverishly to make new versions of their programs, each attempting to outdo the other with faster, better products.
-
Ultimately, Microsoft's biggest flaw was hubris. The point blank refusal to adhere to the World Wide Web Consortium guidelines made web pages look warped and different than when they showed on the compliant browsers like Firefox and Chrome. On top of that, Internet Explorer was very rarely updated .
