Iliceto FAQ
-
To diagnose myocarditis, a health care provider will typically examine you and listen to your heart with a stethoscope. Blood and imaging tests may be done to check your heart health. Imaging tests can help confirm myocarditis and determine its severity.
-
Myocarditis affects your heart's electrical system and muscle cells, leading to irregular heart rhythms and problems with your heart's pumping function. In severe cases, your heart becomes too weak to adequately pump enough blood to the rest of your body.
-
Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, sarcoidosis and others can also cause myocarditis because the immune system can attack any organ in the body, including the heart, causing inflammation. Drugs or other environmental or toxic exposures can lead to myocarditis as well.
-
Almost 20% of sudden deaths in young people have a connection to myocarditis. The survival rate for myocarditis is 80% one year after having it and 50% five years later.
-
The diagnosis is often achieved clinically and with the use of diagnostic imaging. Echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are commonly used to assess biventricular function [5]. Cardiac MRI can also detect the presence of necrosis or scar in myocarditis by late gadolinium enhancement.
-
Myocarditis can lead to other serious heart conditions, such as heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmias. Inflammation can extend to the pericardium and cause a condition called myopericarditis. This will cause symptoms of both myocarditis and pericarditis.
-
Most people will recover without any lasting effects. But in rare cases, if the inflammation is severe, myocarditis can scar the heart muscle. This damage means the heart has to work harder to pump blood and oxygen around the body.
-
Myocarditis can cause the heart muscle to weaken and can lead to cardiomyopathy. Johns Hopkins cardiologist and heart failure expert Nisha Aggarwal Gilotra, M.D., explains symptoms, causes and treatment for myocarditis.
