Presently, is the preferred first-line antibiotic for the treatment of acute watery diarrhea (single dose 500 mg), as well as for febrile diarrhea and dysentery (single dose 1,000 mg).

Loperamide, a synthetic opiate agonist, decreases peristaltic activity and inhibits secretion, resulting in the reduction of fluid and electrolyte loss and an increase in stool consistency. is a bile acid sequestrant that is generally considered as the first-line treatment for bile acid diarrhea.

Diarrhea caused by an infection usually begins 12 hours to four days after exposure and resolves within three to seven days. A person may have mild to severe diarrhea. Some people with diarrhea also have fever (temperature greater than 100.4°F or 38°C), abdominal pain, or cramping.

Oral rehydration therapy Recommended oral replacement fluids are glucose-electrolyte solutions known collectively as oral rehydration solutions (ORS). ORT has been a life saving therapy for many patients with severe diarrhoea.

Infectious diarrhea presents with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea that may be watery, malabsorptive, or bloody. Inflammatory diarrhea presents with fever, abdominal pain, blood and/or leukocytes in stool. Osmotic diarrhea presents with fasting, bulky, greasy, foul smelling stools, and weight loss.

The most commonly used are the antimotility agents such as loperamide and a diphenoxylate- combination. These agents act by increasing intestinal transit time and enhancing the potential for reabsorption of fluid and electrolytes.

Non-infectious diarrhea DOES NOT spread from person-to-person. Who gets it? Anyone can catch infectious diarrhea. It can spread especially quickly among babies and young children who are not toilet-trained or who may not wash their hands well after going to the bathroom.
