Oral contraceptive pills (OCP) consist of the hormones progestin and estrogen, or only progestin, and must be taken orally once per day in order to prevent pregnancy. Currently, there are three different types available on the market: the combination pill, the progestin-only pill, and the continuous use pill.

The birth control pill is a type of oral contraception that uses hormones to prevent pregnancy. “Oral” means you take it by mouth. Contraception is any form of birth control — any device or method to prevent pregnancy. People call it “the pill” because it comes in pill form that's easy to take.

The combined oral contraceptive pill is usually known as the pill. It contains synthetic female hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. The hormones in the pill mimic the ones made naturally in the ovaries. The hormones in the pill stop a woman's ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulating).

Take the 1st pill from the section of the packet marked "start". This will be an active pill. Continue to take a pill every day, in the correct order and preferably at the same time each day, until the pack is finished (28 days). During the 7 days of taking the inactive pills, you will get a bleed.

Adults and teenagers 15 years of age and older—One white, light blue, or blue tablet (active) taken at the same time each day for 21 consecutive days followed by one dark green (inert) tablet daily for 7 days per menstrual cycle.

Oral contraceptive pills are either combined estrogen-progesterone(also called combined oral contraceptive pill- COC) or progesterone-only pill (POP). The most commonly prescribed pill is the combined hormonal pill with estrogen and progesterone.

The minipill. This type of pill contains only progestin. The minipill doesn't offer as many choices as combination pills. In each pack of pills, all the pills contain the same amount of progestin and all the pills are active. The progestin dose in a minipill is lower than the progestin dose in any combination pill.
