Code J indicates that there was an early distribution from a ROTH IRA. The amount may or may not be taxable depending on the amount distributed and the taxpayer's basis in ROTH IRA Contributions.

If Box 7 of your 1099-R shows a 7 in it, this distribution isn't taxable if you met the plan requirements (the age and/or years of service required by the plan) for retirement, and you retired after meeting those requirements.

Use Code 7: (a) for a normal distribution from a plan, including a traditional IRA, section 401(k), or section 403(b) plan, if the employee/taxpayer is at least age 591/2; (b) for a Roth IRA conversion if the participant is at least age 591/2; and (c) to report a distribution from a life insurance, annuity, or ...

If an IRA conversion contribution or a rollover from a qualified plan is made to a Roth IRA that is later revoked or closed, and a distribution is made to the taxpayer, enter the gross distribution in box 1 of Form 1099-R. If no earnings are distributed, enter 0 (zero) in box 2a and Code J in box 7.

The code(s) in Box 7 of your Form 1099-R helps identify the type of distribution you received. We use these codes and your answers to some interview questions to determine if your distribution is taxable or subject to an early withdrawal penalty.

Use Code B for a distribution from a designated Roth account. But use Code E for a section 415 distribution under EPCRS (see Code E) or Code H for a direct rollover to a Roth IRA.

Generally, Code 2 is reflected on the Form 1099-R Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc. received from the payer of the distribution for a Roth IRA conversion, where a Traditional IRA is converted to a Roth IRA.

Note A code of "T" means the issuer of the 1099-R knows the recipient is over age 59 1/2 but does not know if the Roth IRA was held at least five years.
