Atlantica FAQ
-
Foraminifera are an important part of the marine food chain. On the continental shelf there can be tens of thousands of living individuals per square meter of ocean bottom. Many larger animals (including snails, sand dollars, and fish) eat forams, and some are very selective about which species they eat.
-
Foraminifera has played a significant role in the reconstruction of the marine environment and climate in the Phanerozoic. The present-day distribution of foraminifera provides a strong basis to use them in paleoclimate reconstruction. The LBF is confined to tropical to the temperate climate.
-
Foraminifera (forams for short) are single-celled organisms (protists) with shells or tests (a technical term for internal shells). They are abundant as fossils for the last 540 million years.
-
They are extremely abundant in most marine sediments and in many different depositional settings. Their habitat ranges from marine to brackish settings, even freshwater. They are used to distinguish near shore to the deep sea settings or from near surface to the ocean floor associations.
-
Foraminifera is the most extensively used marine microfossils in deep-time reconstruction of the earth history. Its key applications are in paleoenvironment and paleoclimate interpretation, paleoceanography, and biostratigraphy to continuously improve the Geologic Time Scale.

-
Foraminifera that lived in the geological past were also controlled by the environment. Fossil foraminifera can be used to identify the conditions in which the enclosing sediments accumulated. We can use them to recognise, for example: glacial and warm episodes during the Quaternary.
-
The distributions patterns of reef-dwelling foraminiferal species are influenced by a variety of physical and chemical parameters, including light penetration, water motion, temperature, salinity, pH, and oxygen concentrations.
