Initiate breastfeeding within one hour from birth and promote exclusive breastfeeding for about the first 6 months of age. 2. Ensure timely introduction of complementary feeds at the end of the sixth month. If signs of hunger are observed earlier, complementary feeding could be started after completing four months.

Infants should drink breast milk and/or formula for the first year of life. Fruit juice is not recommended under 1 year of age. When introducing juice, offer 100% pasteurized juice and limit it to 4–6 ounces per day. Do NOT place juice in a bottle. Avoid giving any sugar-sweetened beverages to infants.

At about 2 months of age, babies usually take 4 to 5 ounces per feeding every 3 to 4 hours. At 4 months, babies usually take 4 to 6 ounces per feeding. At 6 months, babies may be taking up to 8 ounces every 4 to 5 hours.

WHO and UNICEF recommend: early initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth; exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life; and. introduction of nutritionally-adequate and safe complementary (solid) foods at 6 months together with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.

In Ethiopia, 10% of newborns under six months are given complementary foods in addition to breast milk, while 3% of children under 0-1 months are given additional food [3]. Ten percent of infants under the age of two months drink other liquids, and 12 percent drink milk other than breast milk [5].
