The ASAM Criteria's strength-based multidimensional assessment takes into account a patient's needs, obstacles and liabilities, as well as their strengths, assets, resources, and support structure. This information is used to determine the appropriate level of care across a continuum.

The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition, Volume 1 - Adults is a comprehensive set of guidelines that use a holistic, person-centered approach to developing treatment plans for patients with addiction and co-occurring conditions.

Residential services at this level consist of a setting, such as a group home, where people live. However, treatment is only required to be 5 hours per week, which helps people with such topics as relapse management. Level 3.3 is clinically managed high-intensity and population-specific services.

The ASAM Criteria defines the standards for conducting a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment to inform patient placement and treatment planning. These standards describe six dimensions that should be assessed, including: Acute intoxication and/or withdrawal potential. Biomedical conditions and complications.

ASAM outlines various levels of care based on the outcome of the 6 ASAM dimensions assessment. These levels of care are on a scale ranging from 0.5 to 4, with 4 being the most intensive.

The Wellness Self-Assessment is a tool intended for individual level self-assessment, it is not a scientific questionnaire used for diagnostic purposes. It will help you become more aware of your current level of wellness and what changes, if any, you might want to make.

The goal of substance abuse screening is to identify individuals who have or are at risk for developing alcohol- or drug-related problems, and within that group, identify patients who need further assessment to diagnose their substance use disorders and develop plans to treat them (see Chapter 4).
