(WXYZ) — Michigan drivers will be paying more at the pump in 2023 because the Michigan gas tax has gone up. A law signed under former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder increased Michigan's gas tax from 27.2 cents a gallon to 28.6 cents. The rate increase is either 5% each year or the rate of inflation.

A refund can be claimed on the Claim for Refund of Motor Fuel Tax Form for your exempt use. Contact Special Taxes Division, Statutory Refund Unit at 517-636-4600 to request the Statutory Claim for Refund Form.

New Prepaid Fuel Sales Tax Rates Effective January 1, 2024 through January 31, 2024 the new prepaid sales tax rate for: Gasoline is 17.0 cents per gallon. Diesel is 22.5 cents per gallon.

Federal excise tax rates remain at $0.183/gal for gasoline and $0.243/gal for diesel fuel.

Michigan's gas tax is 27.2 cents per gallon and it went into effect on January 1, 2022. It will remain in place until at least the end of the year.
