The Lenape were divided into 3 groups or clans: the Musee (Wolf clan); Unami (Turtle Clan), and Unalachtigo (Turkey Clan). The Wolf Clan claimed the land in northern New Jersey and southern New York. The Turtle Clan controlled central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.

Thousands more belong to tribal nations located in New Jersey, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Ontario, Canada. Today, many descendants of the Lenape call themselves Delaware. Native people and nations take pride in their cultural heritage and find ways to celebrate their rich histories.

The Lenape, like other Native tribes, were relocated to Oklahoma, where there are two federally recognized Lenape tribes: the Delaware Tribe of Indians and the Delaware Tribe of Western Oklahoma. There are also some small Lenape communities remaining in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Today, the other two federally recognized Lenape tribes are the Delaware Nation, which also calls Oklahoma home, and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community in Wisconsin.

The Lenape languages aren't nearly as widely known as they once were. The Penn Museum estimates that there are fewer than 10 Munsee speakers alive — and no Unami speakers.

Lenape historical territory included New Jersey, Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania along the Delaware River watershed, New York City, western Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley. There are three clans: Turtle (Unami). Turkey (Unalachtigo), and Wolf (Munsee). The clans are matrilineal based on the mother's line.

In 1624, as the Dutch settled in what is now Lower Manhattan, the Lenape of Manahatta began to lose their homeland. It has been said that in 1626 the Lenape “sold” Manahatta to Peter Minuit, director of the Dutch settlement, for sixty guilders (about $24 at that time) worth of trade goods.
