The truth is that the term “bar” literally means just that — it refers to the railing that separates the working area of the court, including the tables for the prosecutor and the defense lawyers, the judge's bench, the witness box, the jury seats, and the court reporter's station.

The ABA is the largest voluntary professional association in the world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.

The mission of the association is to cultivate the science of jurisprudence; promote reform in the law; facilitate the administration of justice; and elevate the standards of integrity, honor, professional skill, and courtesy in the legal profession.
