The Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCV), formerly known as Section 8, is a tenant-based rental assistance program that helps low-income individuals and families rent safe, decent, and affordable dwelling units in the private rental market.

Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) To apply for either type of help, visit your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Some PHAs have long waiting lists, so you may want to apply at more than one PHA. Your PHA can also give you a list of locations at which your voucher can be used.

Rental Subsidies: The rental subsidy is the portion of the rent that is paid by the Section 8 program on behalf of the tenant. In Georgia, the rental subsidy is generally calculated as the difference between 30% of the household's adjusted gross income and the applicable payment standard.

In addition to meeting the income limits, Section 8 applicants in Georgia must be U.S. citizens or have eligible immigrant status. Eligible applicants will also need to have clean criminal records and be able to pass a screening process.
