For each TREC, NIST provides a test set of docu- ments and questions. Participants run their retrieval systems on the data, and return to NIST a list of the retrieved top-ranked documents. NIST pools the in- dividual results, judges the retrieved documents for correctness, and evaluates the results.

TREC-style evaluation is generally considered to be the use of test collections, an evaluation methodology referred to as the Cranfield paradigm.
