Started in 1927, the pool was renamed the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) in 1956. The organization continues to integrate additional utility transmission systems into its operations.

PJM is called an “independent system operator” or “ISO” because it has independent authority, overseen by FERC, to operate the transmission lines owned by the utilities. PJM has also been designated by FERC as the “regional transmission organization” or “RTO” for its territory.

The U.S. grid is divided into three major regions: The Eastern Interconnection, which operates in states east of the Rocky Mountains. The Western Interconnection, which covers the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountain states. The Texas Interconnected system.

PJM Interconnection coordinates the movement of electricity through all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The bulk-power system in Illinois is managed by two different system operators, PJM and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc. (MISO). Customers in the Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) service territory are served by PJM. Customers in the Ameren Illinois service territory are served by MISO.
