S Circular Viral DNA of Bacteriophage 4X174 RYOZABURO MUKAI AND MASAKI HAYASHI* Department of Biology, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California 92093 Received for publication 21 December 1976 An extract prepared from Escherichia coli cells infected with OX174 bacteriophage was capable of incorporating dTTP into phage-specific DNAs in vitro. The synthesized DNAs were associated with proteins and sedimented with S values of 20, 50, and 90 in a sucrose gradient sedimentation. DNA.

FAQ
-
Genetic material of ϕ×174 bacteriophage is Single stranded DNA.
-
The cos site represents the junction between two genomes in a concatemer and serves as the packaging initiation site. Unlike the pac sequences of viruses that use the head-full packaging mechanism, cos also serves as a specific packaging termination sequence.
-
A DNA sequence for the genome of bacteriophage phi X174 of approximately 5,375 nucleotides has been determined using the rapid and simple 'plus and minus' method.
-
Bacteriophage have either DNA or RNA as their genetic material, in either circular or linear configuration, as a single- or a double-stranded molecule.
-
The phi X 174 (or ΦX174) bacteriophage is a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) virus that infects Escherichia coli, and the first DNA-based genome to be sequenced. This work was completed by Fred Sanger and his team in 1977.
-
Coliphage: The virus which infect Escherichia coli is called the Coliphage. It is a type of bacteriophage. The Coliphage Ï• X174 contains Single-stranded DNA made of 5386 nucleotides that encodes 11 proteins. The genome of Coliphage Ï• X174 was first sequenced by Fredrick Sanger in 1977.
