More than a month after a teachers strike halted Oakland Unified classes for seven days in May, the district's board approved a deal with the teacher's union that will significantly increase teacher salaries and, district leaders hope, convince more teachers to stay.

Illinois holds the record for the longest teachers' strike to date. This was an eight month strike beginning in October 1986 in Homer, IL. After roughly one month, the school board hired strike breaking substitutes for much of the school year.

All union members will receive 10% pay raises retroactive to Nov. 1, 2022, and a one-time payment of $5,000. OUSD is also revising the teacher salary scale, which determines how much teachers make based on their years of experience, education level, and additional professional development received.

Union officials said they felt optimistic about the agreement, but that the 3,000 members still needed to have their say in a vote. Teachers would not be paid for the days they were on strike because they were not working those seven days, district officials said.

Around 4 a.m. Monday morning, OUSD announced it had reached an agreement with the teachers union and that normal school activities would resume on Tuesday, May 16. Monday is a transition day for teachers to return to their classrooms after being on strike since May 4.
