SBA only makes direct loans in the case of businesses and homeowners recovering from a declared disaster. SBA partners with lenders to help increase small business access to loans.

We help small businesses when they experience excessive or unfair federal regulatory enforcement actions. Congress established the Office of the National Ombudsman in 1996 to assist small businesses, small government entities, and small nonprofits when they are subject to excessive enforcement by a federal agency.

Instead, the SBA 504 loan program is funded when private investors (usually institutional investors like insurance companies, pension funds, large banks, and some individuals under particular circumstances) buy your loan from a Certified Development Company (CDC) in an SBA 504 loan debt monthly sale.

SBA's mission is to "aid, counsel, assist and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns." It also is charged with ensuring that small businesses earn a "fair proportion" of government contracts and sales of surplus property.

The SBA assists small businesses in four main areas: financing, education and training, government contracting, and providing a voice in policy matters. These programs are aimed at helping entrepreneurs start their businesses and keep them thriving.

SBA was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns; preserve free competitive enterprise; and maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation.

Where Does the SBA Get Its Funding? The SBA receives an annual budget approved by the federal government. This money goes toward salaries, grant and loan programs, and administrative costs. Keep in mind that the SBA doesn't actually provide loans to small businesses.
