Air cargo giants FedEx and UPS, the two largest remaining operators of the McDonnell Douglas-developed MD-11 freighter, have both announced plans to begin retiring their fleets of aging trijets. Between them, FedEx and UPS currently operate 94 MD-11s, or almost half of the 200 aircraft delivered between 1990 and 2001.

While it was selling for $100 million, the initial MD-11 jets cost $120 to $150 million to produce but this was to reduce to $90 million with manufacturing experience over the program life for an 11% gross profit margin, less than the 15% to 20% Boeing obtains.

MD-11 burns 7500–7750 kg/hr at cruise vs A340–600 8,700 kg/hr. As a comparison, a 777–300ER will burn 7,900 kg/hr under the same conditions, a 787–9 5,400 kg/hr and a 747–8i 10,300 kg/hr.

The Boeing 777-300ER and 777-200LR have slightly reduced seating capacities, but only by a few seats. Looking at the numbers, we can say that the 777 series can seat more passengers, with the 777-300 having so much more room onboard than the MD-11 (which makes sense as the 777-300 is over ten meters longer).

The last manufactured MD-11 was delivered on February 22, 2001 to Lufthansa Cargo. A total of 200 MD-11's have been built. Currently, the MD-11 is only used as a freighter and is in use with UPS, FedEx, Lufthansa Cargo and Western Global Airlines.
