Reporting Partnership Income Each partner reports their share of the partnership's income or loss on their personal tax return. Partners are not employees and shouldn't be issued a Form W-2. The partnership must furnish copies of Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) to the partner.

If you are in business as a sole proprietorship, you report your income and expenses on a Schedule C attached to your federal Form 1040 tax return when it is filed. If you are a corporation or a partnership, you typically file a Form 1120 or a Form 1065 tax return.

Publication 17 covers the general rules for filing a federal income tax return. It supplements the information contained in your tax form instruction booklet. It explains the tax law to make sure you pay only the tax you owe and no more.

Statutes of limitations generally limit the time the IRS has to make tax assessments to within three years after a return is due or filed, whichever is later. That particular date is also referred to as the statute expiration date.

A partner will report his or her share of ordinary partnership income on Schedule E of Form 1040. Separately stated items of income or loss are reported on the appropriate forms or schedules. For example, capital gains shown on the partner's Schedule K-1 are reported on Schedule D of the partner's Form 1040.

The partnership files a copy of Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) with the IRS to report your share of the partnership's income, deductions, credits, etc.

Form 1065, U.S. Return of Partnership Income, is a tax form used by partnerships to provide a statement of financial performance and position to the IRS each tax year. The form includes information related to a partnership's income and deductions, gains and losses, taxes and payments during the tax year.

If you owe tax and don't file on time, there's also a penalty for not filing on time. The failure-to-file penalty is usually five percent of the tax owed for each month, or part of a month that your return is late, up to a maximum of 25%.
