In the United States, they are primarily intended for animals competing in International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) events. In the United Kingdom, it is now required for all equines to have a "passport" and an animal cannot be sold without one.

Book an appointment with your equine vet to complete the horse passport application. Your vet will check if your horse already has a microchip at the time of completing the identification and will record the number on the new passport application or will put one in if there is no microchip in place.

If the horse does not have a passport, you will need to apply for a passport from one of the approved PIOs within 30 days of importing the horse.

Where you are required to return the passport please post it to Horse Passport Agency UK, PO Box 74, Ellesmere, SY12 2AD by recorded or special delivery with the application form and fee. Keep a record of the Life Number on the passport and photocopy any vaccination records.

A Passport Service application can be downloaded from our website, .usef.org, or an application can be sent out from USEF by fax, mail, or email. The application must be completed legibly ing to the directions and mailed or faxed back to USEF.

If you buy a horse Contact the Passport Issuing Organisation ( PIO ) within 30 days to update the passport ownership details. If the seller does not give you the horse's passport, contact your local trading standards office for advice.
