As long as the symptoms remain mild and are not increasing slowly in intensity, then you might be able to wait out the allergic reaction at home. If you have any severe food allergy symptoms, signs of anaphylaxis (see below), or worsening symptoms, then you should go to the ER immediately.

Immediately call 911 or your local medical emergency number. Ask if the person is carrying an epinephrine autoinjector (, Auvi-Q, others) to treat an allergic attack. If the person needs to use an autoinjector, ask whether you should help inject the medication.

If the allergic reaction is limited to isolated skin symptoms, oral symptoms or throat itching, or gastrointestinal symptoms not including vomiting, you can use an oral antihistamine first and observe the person very closely, with a source of epinephrine ready to be used if symptoms progress.

Adrenaline is an effective treatment for more severe allergic symptoms, such as anaphylaxis. People with a food allergy are often given a device known as an auto-injector pen, which contains doses of adrenaline that can be used in emergencies.

An anaphylaxis emergency plan lists a person's allergies, the signs and symptoms to watch for, and the emergency procedure to follow in case of a reaction. It's important to share this form with your child's school and caregivers, and to review it with your child, depending on their age.
