A fasting blood sugar level of 99 mg/dL or lower is normal, 100 to 125 mg/dL indicates you have prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher indicates you have diabetes.

Time-in-range emerged as a valuable blood glucose metric, 'beyond HbA1c' for a deeper insight into glycemic control in people with diabetes. It denotes the proportion of time that a person's glucose level remains within the desired target range (usually 70–180 mg/dL or 3.9–10.0 mmol/L).

Time in Range, or TIR, is the amount of time those with diabetes spend with their blood glucose levels in a recommended target range and is represented as a percentage. Finding this “happy medium” can be difficult. So, more and more people with diabetes use continuous glucose monitors (CGM) to help achieve TIR.

Published data suggest a strong correlation between TIR and A1C, with a goal of 70% TIR aligning with an A1C of ∼7% in two prospective studies (2, 3). The ADA's Time in Range initiative will provide guidance on treating your patients with diabetes who might benefit from time in range.

What is time in range? Time in range is the amount of time you spend in the target blood glucose (blood sugar) range—between 70 and 180 mg/dL for most people.

Time in Range can also be understood as “hours per day” spent in-range. For example, 50% Time in Range (70-180 mg/dl) means 12 hours per day spent in-range.
