Official Mexican Standards (NOM) are mandatory technical regulations. They regulate products, processes and services when these may constitute a risk to people, animals, vegetables and the environment in general, among others. Mexican Standards (NMX) are developed by a national standardization body, or the SE.

A NOM certification is only granted by the Mexican government to manufacturers, importers and sellers from countries that the government has a free trade treaty or an agreement regarding trade. First-time applicants must provide two original service agreement copies that have been signed on each page and section.

What is an Official Mexican Standard (NOM)? Official Mexican Standards, or Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOMs), are legal enforcement documents regulating products, processes, or services that may constitute a safety or health risk for people, animals, plants, or the environment in general.

The NOM identifier means the tequila meets government standards - but this is not any guarantee of tequila's quality. However, without the NOM stamp of legitimacy, it is not guaranteed that the bottle contains tequila. All 100% agave tequilas must have a NOM identifier on the bottle.

The Norma Oficial Mexicana (Official Mexican Standard), abbreviated NOM, is the name of each of a series of official, compulsory standards and regulations for diverse activities in Mexico. They are more commonly referred to as NOMs or normas.
