The City of Tacoma's strategic plan to address homelessness recognizes that ending homelessness in Tacoma will require short-term and long-range efforts built on public-private partnerships to address immediate needs like shelter, while also addressing housing affordability in our community.

The ordinance, passed by the City Council on a 6-3 vote Oct. 11, restricts homeless camps within 10 blocks of the city's temporary shelters and within 200 feet of protected waters and the Puyallup River.

Homelessness by the Numbers. As of July 2022, there are an estimated 4,300 people in Pierce County experiencing homelessness. There are 1,300 emergency shelter beds and 30 safe parking units across the county, leaving about 2,970 people without shelter each night.

Coordinated Entry is the first step in ending homelessness. The Coordinated Entry system can be accessed three different ways: Call 2-1-1 for live, on-demand support or to schedule an appointment. Speak to a Mobile Outreach team in the community. Drop-in to any of these facilities for a same-day conversation.

We encourage people to report encampment concerns through Tacoma FIRST 311 to ensure that we are aware and have record of activities. All requests are investigated by the City's Homeless Engagement Alternatives Liaison (HEAL) Team who determine the appropriate priority for removing active sites.
