When you receive a call your carrier sends the number the call is from. Officially, all calls to US numbers begin with a “+1” because that is the region code for North America and the Caribbean (technically, the North American Numbering Plan or NANP).

"+" signifies the international dialing prefix, "1" indicates the country code, in this case USA.

You can use the “+” symbol in place of “011” if dialing from a cell phone. The “+” sign is usually the same key as “0” on a smartphone's keypad. Some countries share a country code. For example, Canada, the United States, some places in the Caribbean, and Guam share “1” as a country code.

For example, if a contact in the United States (country code "1") has the area code "408" and phone number "-X", you'd enter +1 408 X.

Simply dial 1, the area code, and the number you are trying to reach. To call a phone in another country, dial 011, and then the code for the country you are calling, the area or city code, and the phone number.
