Nine Justices make up the current Supreme Court: one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices. The Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr., is the 17th Chief Justice of the United States, and there have been 102 Associate Justices in the Court's history.

State court judges are elected to four-year terms in county-wide nonpartisan elections. Vacancies in state court may be filled by appointment of the Governor.

Oral arguments are open to the public. The courtroom is on the sixth floor of the State Judicial Building, which is located at the corner of Mitchell and Washington streets in downtown Atlanta next to the state Capitol Building.

The Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the state. It has nine justices and comprehensive jurisdiction. The Court of Appeals is the first stop for most civil and criminal appeals in the state. There are 12 judges on the court that hear cases in three-judge panels.

In most cases, it must be filed within 30 days of the entry of the order or judgment being appealed. In dispossessory cases, the notice of appeal must be filed within seven days.

For every appeal, there is a limited period, within which appeal should be filed. Such a limitation is provided under the Limitation Act, 1963. For appeal, in case of a decree passed by lower court in civil suit, the limitation is : Appeal to High Court - 90 days from the date of decree Or order.

Since 1896, the justices (increased in number to six, then to seven in 1945, and finally to nine in 2017) have been elected by the people of the state. The justices are currently elected in statewide non-partisan elections for six-year terms, with any vacancies filled through an appointment by the Governor.

The cost of filing a direct appeal or an application to appeal is $80 for criminal cases and $300 for civil cases. Application costs must be paid when the application is filed. If you file a direct appeal, you must pay the costs by the time you file your brief. Fees may be paid by cash, check, or money order.

The state also has a Court of Appeals made of 15 judges. Georgia is divided into 49 judicial circuits, each of which has a Superior Court consisting of local citizens numbering between two and 19 members depending on the circuit population.
