All taxable personal property in North Carolina is appraised at its true value in money. The two main exceptions are inventories owned by manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, and contractors as well as non-business personal property. These types of personal property have been exempted by statute in North Carolina.

​​​​North Carolina property tax law requires counties to assess the value of motor vehicles registered with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles. As part of NCDMV's Tag & Tax Together program, the vehicle owner pays the property tax at the same time as the vehicle's registration renewal fee.

In North Carolina, the homestead exemption applies to real and personal property, including your home, condominium, co-op, or burial plot. The property must be owned by a North Carolina resident. The resident or dependents must live in the property when filing for bankruptcy to claim the homestead exemption.

For an owner whose income exceeds the income eligibility limit ($33,800) but does not exceed 150% of the income eligibility limit, which for the 2022 tax year is $50,700, the owner's taxes will be limited to five percent (5%) of the owner's income.

A qualifying owner must either be at least 65 years of age or be totally and permanently disabled. The owner cannot have an income amount for the previous year that exceeds the income eligibility limit for the current year, which for the 2021 tax year is $31,500. See G.S. 105-277.1 for the full text of the statute.

To qualify, parcels must be at least a certain number of acres (5 acres if used for horticulture, 10 acres if used for crops or livestock, 20 acres if used for forestry).

This program excludes from taxation the first $25,000 or up to 50% (whichever is greater) of your home value and one acre of land. Exclusion means some of the value of the primary residence will not be considered when your tax bill is created.

If you qualify for a Homestead Exclusion, either $25,000 or 50% of the appraised value of your residence (whichever is greater) will be exempt from property taxation.
