REPAYING LOANS. During any period that your federal student loans are in forbearance, you don't have to make payments on those loans, and the loans won't go into default.

A forbearance is a period during which you are allowed to postpone making payments temporarily, allowed an extension of time for making payments, or temporarily allowed to make smaller payments than scheduled.

A forbearance allows you to temporarily stop making your monthly student loan payments or temporarily make smaller payments. You usually won't be making progress toward forgiveness or paying back your loan during a forbearance.

A forbearance allows you to temporarily stop making your monthly student loan payments or temporarily make smaller payments. You usually won't be making progress toward forgiveness or paying back your loan during a forbearance.

You are eligible for this deferment if you're enrolled at least half-time at an eligible college or career school. If you're a graduate or professional student who received a Direct PLUS Loan, you qualify for an additional six months of deferment after you cease to be enrolled at least half-time. Important!

Most types of forbearance are not automatic—you need to submit a request to your student loan servicer, often using a form. Also, for some types of forbearance, you must provide your student loan servicer with documentation to show that you meet the eligibility requirements for the forbearance you are requesting.

If you're having trouble repaying your loans, you may consider requesting a loan deferment or forbearance: With a loan deferment, you can temporarily stop making payments. With a loan forbearance, you can stop making payments or reduce your monthly payments for up to 12 months.

Student loan forbearance is almost always a last resort, not a first option. Use it if you need temporary relief and don't qualify for deferment. For long-term problems, consider an IDR plan instead. If possible, pay the interest as it accrues to avoid paying interest on interest when you do resume repayment.
