OSHA interprets the phrase "within the work area" to require that eye/face wash units and emergency deluge showers both be located within 10 feet of unimpeded travel distance from the corrosive material hazard or, in the alternative, within the distance recommended by a physician or appropriate official the employer ...

ANSI Standard Z358. 1-2004 states that drench hose units may supplement, but may not be used in place of, dedicated eye wash units. Guardian offers a series of units that meet the provisions for both an eye wash and a drench hose.

Installed and portable emergency eyewash units must be capable of delivering not less then 0.4 gallons (1.5L) of clean water per minute. Portable eyewash units must be capable of delivering water continuously for at least 15 minutes. The water must be readily available to wash both eyes simultaneously.

To meet the ANSI Z358 requirements, the emergency shower and eyewash station must be within 10 seconds reach from where an accident occurs. That's approximately 55 feet. The emergency safety equipment should also be installed on the same level as a potential hazard.

The ANSI Z358. 1-2014 standard establishes a universal minimum performance and use requirements for all Eyewash and Drench Shower equipment used for the treatment of the eyes, face, and body of a person who has been exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals.

An eyewash unit must be within a 10-second distance of the workspace. It takes the average person walking at a normal pace about 10 seconds to cross 55 feet, which is the ANSI requirement for eyewash and emergency drenching stations.

Eyewashes and ADA Standards While ADA has no specific guidelines for eyewashes or eye/face washes, it does have other guidelines that can be helpful – such as maximum sink and/or counter height. ADA allows a maximum sink and/or counter height of 34 inches above the floor.

Inspection Frequency: Activate all eyewash units at least weekly (Section 5.5. 2). Inspect all eyewash units annually for compliance with the ANSI Z358.
