The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day.

Overview. In School Year (SY) 2022–23, California became the first state to implement a statewide Universal Meals Program for school children. California's Universal Meals Program (Universal Meals) builds on the foundations of the federal National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP).

In July 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed into law a state budget that includes funding for universal free school meals for the 2023-2024 school year, which included and additional $25 million in funding for the program.

All students can participate in school nutrition programs; however, students with family incomes under 130 percent of the federal poverty line are eligible for free meals, and those with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty line are eligible for low-cost (or “reduced-price”) meals.

Regardless of your determined eligibility status, your child will continue to receive free meals for the 2023-2024 school year. Please visit https://.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/rs/scales2324.asp for more information on eligibility.

To be eligible, your program must have at least 25% of enrolled children meeting the USDA Income Eligibility Guidelines for the National School Lunch Program's free or reduced-price meals in the state of Texas (under 185% of the federal poverty guidelines, new rates are effective July 1 of each year).

CACFP is a part of the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and the National School Lunch Act(NSLA), USDA and the State Department of Education in Alabama. This program reimburses licensed child care centers and family day care home providers who offer nutritious meals and snacks to children while in care.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a state and federally funded Child Nutrition Program designed to provide nutritious meals and snacks served to infants, children, and adults. CACFP providers are reimbursed for meals and snacks that are served.
