What documents do I need to travel? You need to get a Refugee Travel Document from Passport Canada. It is recognized in all countries as a valid travel document. However, you cannot use it to travel to the country that you are a citizen of or the country of claimed persecution.

A protected person who is not a permanent resident and who intends to travel outside Canada must obtain an RTD from the Passport Office before leaving Canada by submitting an Adult Travel Document Application (PPTC 190) or a Child Travel Document Application (PPTC 192).

Convention refugees and protected persons can use a Refugee Travel Document (RTD), issued by the Passport Canada, in order to exit and re-enter Canada.

You should file a Form I-131 for a Refugee Travel Document before you leave the United States. We recommend that you file the form no less than 60 days before you leave the United States.

You can use a refugee travel document for travel to all countries, except your country of citizenship. The issuing office decides the validity period.

If you are a refugee, you are required by law to apply for permanent resident status 1 year after being admitted to the United States in refugee status. If you are an asylee, you are not required to apply for permanent resident status after being granted asylum for 1 year.

Permanent Resident Card A new permanent resident (PR) card takes 36 days to process. However, renewing or replacing an old PR card takes can take 70 days to process.

How long may a protected person remain in Canada? Unless they receive an enforceable removal order, protected persons may stay in Canada indefinitely. Nonetheless, if they need to travel outside Canada, they usually must apply for a refugee travel document.
