Excessive groundwater pumping can overdraft aquifers, emptying them faster than natural systems can replenish them. Overdraft can result in wells going dry, saltwater intrusion, depletion of surface water supplies, and cause the land to collapse (i.e., subsidence).

Swamps, lakes, rivers are examples of permanent groundwater. These bodies of water are persistent and in the case of drought, are replenished by groundwater. Semi-permanent surface water, also called ephemeral surface water, includes features such as creeks, streams, waterholes, and lagoons.

Groundwater supplies drinking water for 51% of the total U.S. population and 99% of the rural population. Groundwater helps grow our food. 64% of groundwater is used for irrigation to grow crops. Groundwater is an important component in many industrial processes.

Groundwater, which is in aquifers below the surface of the Earth, is one of the Nation's most important natural resources. Groundwater is the source of about 37 percent of the water that county and city water departments supply to households and businesses (public supply).

Groundwater helps to keep our rivers flowing. Groundwater is used for drinking water by close to 50% of the people in the United States, but its largest use is for crop irrigation and agricultural production.

As per report of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of UN, the countries with the largest extent of areas equipped for irrigation with groundwater, in absolute terms, are India (39 million ha), China (19 million ha) and the USA (17 million ha).
