What do the terms mean? Ongoing operations applies to work considered in progress. Standard CGL policies apply only to a named insured's “ongoing operations,” which provides coverage to themselves and their additional insureds for property damage and injury as work is actively underway on a project.

An exclusion is a statement in an insurance policy which describes a loss the policy does not cover, even though the general language of the policy seems to indicate there would be coverage. Since exclusions take away some of the coverage of the policy, the law requires that they be clearly written and very specific.

The designated workplaces exclusion endorsement is a standard workers compensation endorsement (WC 00 03 02) that removes coverage for injuries sustained at workplaces listed in the endorsement.

The exclusion—designated ongoing operations endorsement (CG 21 53) can be used to remove coverage for either operations in progress at a specified location or all ongoing operations performed by or on behalf of the named insured.

CG 2134 Exclusion - Designated Work - This endorsement is used by underwriters to eliminate coverage for anything listed on the endorsement schedule.

Let's go back to basics, the dictionary defines “ongoing” as “still in process” and “continuing”. Operations that are “ongoing” refer to work not yet completed. On the other hand, “completed operations” refers to work that has been finished on the job site.

Designated-premises endorsements are meant to limit an insurer's risk to occurrences at the primary business premises used by an insured. A slip-and-fall accident in an insured's parking lot that is attached to the insured's designated premises would likely be covered.
