A human cell contains total 23 pair of chromosomes (2n, total 23×2=46), of which 22 are autosomes and 1 sex chromosome. Karyotyping is a technique to study the structure of chromosomes present in a species. Chromosomes are isolated, stained and photographed.

We inherit a set of 23 chromosomes from our mothers and another set of 23 from our fathers. One of those pairs are the chromosomes that determine the biological sex of a child – girls have an XX pair and boys have an XY pair, with very rare exceptions in certain disorders.

Normally, each cell in the human body has 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 total chromosomes). Half come from the mother; the other half come from the father.

Only one pair, chromosome 23 determines the gender. Genetically, a person actually carries more of his/her mother's genes than his/her father's. The reason is little organelles that live within cells, the? mitochondria, which are only received from a mother.

Chromosomes come in pairs. Normally, each cell in the human body has 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 total chromosomes). Half come from the mother; the other half come from the father.

The egg and sperm together give the baby the full set of chromosomes. So, half the baby's DNA comes from the mother and half comes from the father.

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. The first 22 pairs are called autosomes. The last pair are called sex chromosomes, and they are different between males and females. Most females have two X chromosomes (XX), and most males have an X and a Y (XY).

The parts of a chromosome are chromatids, centromere, telomere, and satellite. Only two sister chromatids are present in each chromosome during cell division. For example, a normal human cell with 46 chromosomes will have 92 chromatids.
