You must declare if you're carrying over $10,000 Canadian in total (in gold, Euros, US$, Cnd$, bearer bonds etc).

You can claim goods worth up to CAN$800. You must have tobacco products and alcoholic beverages in your possession when you enter Canada, but other goods may follow you by other means (such as courier or by post). However, all of the goods you are bringing back must be reported to the CBSA when you arrive.

If you do not declare goods, or if you falsely declare them, CBSA officers can seize them. This means that you may lose the goods permanently or may have to pay a penalty (ranging from 25% to 80% of the value of the seized items) to get them back. The CBSA keeps a record of infractions.
