The only exception is if you think telling the patient about the DNACPR decision would cause them physical or psychological harm. If the patient lacks capacity, the decision must be explained to their relatives.

The American Heart Association in 2005 moved from the traditional do not resuscitate (DNR) terminology to do not attempt resuscitation (DNAR). DNAR reduces the implication that resuscitation is likely and creates a better emotional environment to explain what the order means.

All new DNACPR decisions, however, will be recorded on the All Wales DNACPR form from 1 October 2015. Older versions of the form remain valid, but can be reviewed and renewed as appropriate. This 'live' policy will be adjusted to changes in clinical or legal circumstances as they emerge.

DNR/DNAR/AND orders protect and promote patients' autonomy so people can make clear that they do or do not want CPR (ie, to have a code called) if their heart or breathing stops during the hospitalization.

DNACPR is sometimes called DNAR (do not attempt resuscitation) or DNR (do not resuscitate) but they all refer to the same thing. DNACPR means if your heart or breathing stops your healthcare team will not try to restart it. A DNACPR decision is made by you and/or your doctor or healthcare team.

Did you know that there are two different types of DNR orders that can be chosen? The first is the DNR Comfort Care (DNRCC) and the other is the DNR Comfort Care- Arrest (DNRCC-Arrest).

They are a helpful way to protect people from being given CPR inappropriately. Doctors use the official term DNACPR (do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and the forms are also sometimes called DNAR (do not attempt resuscitation).

Purpose of DNACPR orders It should be considered when: a dying patient is at foreseeable risk of cardiac and respiratory arrest and CPR is not clinically appropriate. the risks and uncertain outcome of CPR could outweigh any potential benefits. a patient with capacity has expressed a clear wish not to be given CPR.
