IT IS UNLAWFUL TO: Hunt, fish or trap on any Tribal land within the exterior boundaries of the Winnebago Reservation without first obtaining a Tribal Hunting or Fishing permit. Chase, run, harass, shoot, shoot at, or attempt to take any deer/turkey with a motor vehicle of any kind while it is stopped or in motion.

All non-residents must have a non-resident hunting permit and must purchase the Habitat Stamp. Additional permits may be required. Visit the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission website for more details.

There are over 1.2 million acres of publicly accessible lands in Nebraska including state, federal, and conservation partner lands as well as privately-owned lands enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters (OFW) program.

The Winnebago Reservation was established by a treaty on March 8, 1865. It is located in Thurston and Dixon counties, Nebraska, and Woodbury County, Iowa. The reservation is 176.55 square miles (112,990 acres; 457.3 km2), of which 27,637 acres (43.183 sq mi; 111.84 km2) is tribal trust land.

Hunting opportunities are available across Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands. Hunting seasons, permits and rules are managed by Nebraska Game and Parks. Find out more about where to go, when seasons begin and how to get a permit online at outdoornebraska.gov/hunting.

What public land is open to hunting in Nebraska? Nearly 800,000 acres of it is on state and federal areas. More than 270,000 acres of private land is also open to walk-in hunting and fishing through a special program called Open Fields and Waters.

Nearly 30% of the population lives in the Village of Winnebago, which is the largest community on the Reservation. Only one-third of the Reservation acreage is currently owned by the tribe and individual tribal members, and non-tribal members farm much of this land.

For five days every July, the Ho-Chunk people hold a powwow in Winnebago. A powwow is an Indian social gathering that usually includes dance and music. The Ho-Chunk Nation is a group of Indians, also known as the Winnebago, who originally lived in the Wisconsin area. They farmed and hunted bison.
