The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) is a 41-item self-report measure designed to assess anxiety disorders in children and young people aged 8–18 years over the past three months.

The YAM-5 was developed to measure anxiety symptoms in clinical and non-clinical children and adolescents aged 8–18 years (not only as a self-report but also from the perspective of their parents).

There are several assessment tools available to assess or screen for anxiety disorders. These include the Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) (2), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (3), the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) (4), and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) (5).

SCORING: A total score of ≥ 25 may indicate the presence of an Anxiety Disorder. Scores higher that 30 are more specific. A score of 7 for items 1, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 19, 22, 24, 27, 30, 34, 38 may indicate Panic Disorder or Significant Somatic Symptoms.

The most common symptoms are recurring fears and worries about everyday life, increased irritability, avoidance of school or friends and trouble sleeping. They may also have chronic physical complaints, such as headaches, stomachaches and fatigue.

The SCARED is a child and parent self-report instrument used to screen for childhood anxiety disorders including general anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social phobia. In addition, it assesses symptoms related to school phobia.
