2 SUITABLE ATTIRE Any person approved to ride along is required to be suitably dressed in collared shirt, blouse or jacket, slacks and shoes. Sandals, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and ripped or torn blue jeans are not permitted. Hats and ball caps will not be worn in the hospital vehicle.

A ride along gives the candidate a first-hand look at what happens on an hour-by-hour basis as a police officer. You will be invited to observe what it's like to be a police officer – joining one or more officers during one of their daily shifts.

A ride-along is an arrangement for a civilian to spend a shift in the passenger seat of an emergency vehicle, observing the work day of a police officer, firefighter, or paramedic. Ride-alongs are offered by many police departments around the world. There is a minimum age to participate in a ride-along.

Depending on the department, it is often somewhere between the ages of 12 and 18. When participation of those under 18 is permitted, consent from a parent or legal guardian is required. People with criminal records or under investigation under any law enforcement agencies are prohibited from participation.

If the Escorting Officer directs you to a place of safety, please comply fully with their instructions. You must wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable to the task you are observing. If observing the work of operational staff, you will be provided with a high-visibility jacket marked “Observer”.

This will usually involve placing an observer with a Police Officer, Special Constable or Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), whilst on foot or vehicle based patrol within Community Policing Teams. To participate in a Ride-Along, you must be at least 16 years of age.

Most agencies have rules that prohibit such items even if you have a carry concealed weapon permit or license (CCW). The only exception to the police equipment guidance offered is to wear a bullet resistant or ballistic vest.
