Can people make untraceable bullet in a ghost gun? No bullets are traceable. The whole idea of ballistic fingerprinting, the idea that each gun leaves a unique and detectable mark on the bullets it fires is junk science.

“We certainly can identify . 22-caliber bullets,” said Jay Mason, Supervisor of the Firearms and Toolmark Unit of the Northern Virginia Forensic Laboratory. That puts this one to rest.

Each time a bullet is fired through the barrel of a gun, like the Colt Python, it becomes imprinted with grooves and microscopic imperfections — markings as specific to a gun as fingerprints to a person, he said.

A barrel will produce individual markings in addition to a bullet's land and groove impressions as the bullet passes through, and it is these unique markings that an examiner evaluates to determine whether a given bullet was fired from a particular firearm.

Every pass from the cleaning brushes, every speck of dirt stuck to the bullet as it's fired, the way the barrel wears, are all unique to that barrel. Like the way your foot print can be traced to you by its wear pattern, the impressions on the bullet from the lands, rifling, and scratches what forensic experts look at.

Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage. Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm.

As the bullet is propelled through the barrel, the grooves exert a rotational force on the metal surface that's so strong it leaves marks. Under a microscope, these striae are all distinctive and different – and they will correspond to the grooves inside the barrel of the gun that fired the bullet.

Because each barrel will have imperfections left by the manufacturing process that will leave unique marks on a bullet, firearm examiners can determine whether a bullet recovered from a crime scene or victim was fired from a weapon taken from a suspect.
