You can retire at age 55 with at least five years of service credit. Members under CalSTRS 2% at 60 also have the option to retire at age 50 with at least 30 years of service credit. The increases will become effective for the 2023–24 fiscal year. The increases will be a percentage of the total benefit as follows: 15% for members who retired prior to January 1, 1980. 10% for members who retired between January 1,1980–December 31, 1989.

You can elect membership only during a pay period in which you actually performed creditable service and on the appropriate form provided by your employer. If you participate in the Cash Balance Benefit Program and later become a full-time employee, you automatically will become a member of the Defined Benefit Program.
