The Acute Stress Checklist for Children (ASC-Kids) is a 29-item questionnaire designed to assess child acute stress reactions within the first month after exposure to a potentially traumatic event. Most items are rated on a three-point Likert scale (Never/Not at all; Sometimes/Somewhat; Often/Very much).

The Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS, 12) is a 14-item self-report measure of ASD symptoms (1). It has been updated to be consistent with ASD in DSM-5, and psychometric studies of the ASDS for DSM-5 are not available to date.

Acute stress disorder occurs when a child has a particularly strong reaction to a stressing event such as a real or threatened death, serious injury, sexual violation or a natural disaster. This reaction, which happens from three days to a month after the event, goes beyond the normal upset you'd expect.

The Child Stress Disorders Checklist-Screening Form (CSDCSF) is a 4-item observer report measure designed for use as a screening instrument to identify children at risk for having or developing Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and/or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The average total score reduces the overall score to a 5-point scale, which allows the clinician to think of the severity of the child's acute stress disorder in terms of none (0), mild (1), moderate (2), severe (3), or extreme (4).

The DSM-5 describes acute stress disorder as the development of specific fear behaviors that last from 3 days to 1 month after a traumatic event. These symptoms always occur after the patient has experienced or witnessed death or threat of death, serious injury or sexual assault.

For a child to be diagnosed with acute stress disorder, two things must happen: The child must have personally experienced the upsetting event, seen it happen, or learned that it happened to a close family member. The child must experience several of the symptoms listed above between 3 and 30 days after the event.
