Alaska has the highest population of wolves in the country. There are about 7,000 to 11,000 wolves within the state. Wolves have thrived in Alaska because they haven't experienced the threats or endangerment to which wolf packs in the lower states have been subjected.

As a top predator and a keystone species, gray wolves play an essential role in maintaining the health of their ecosystems. A sudden decline in wolf populations can trigger an ecological collapse, as it did in Yellowstone National Park in the 1920s.

In February 2022, a federal judge restored protection to gray wolves, reversing a Trump-era rule that removed Endangered Species Act protection from the animals across most of the country. The ruling prohibits wolf hunting and trapping in states outside of the northern Rocky Mountains.

Probably the best-known wolf recovery effort was the reintroduction of gray wolves into Yellowstone National Park in 1995. Some studies indicate that in pristine areas such as Yellowstone, the establishment of healthy wolf packs has had a positive cascading effect on the ecosystem.

The Red Wolf SAFE program's goal is to support conservation efforts for this species by maintaining a healthy and viable population of red wolves under human care, growing education and awareness efforts, and aiding research vital to supporting recovery and management.
